Fix Apple Earbud Problems with Earjams
April 11, 2008

I don’t know who Apple designs their earphones for, but it isn’t me. Every set of earphones I’ve ever gotten with an iPod, iPhone, etc. have been too damn big to fit in my ear. They hurt, and they don’t stay in, period.
I’m sure I must just have tiny ears (they probably came as a set with my big mouth), but I can’t be the only person out there that has this problem.

Joffrey’s “Jamaican Me Crazy” Coffee
April 11, 2008

Awhile back, Joffery’s Coffee and Tea was looking for bloggers interested in “beta testing” one of their coffees. Since I’m an unrepentant coffee blogger from way back, I naturally signed up.
Their sign up process asked whether I normally drank flavored or unflavored coffees (unflavored), and whether I preferred pre-ground or whole bean coffee (whole bean, naturally).
So of course, I recently found a care package from Joffrey’s in my mail box, containing a packet of their pre-ground “Jamaican Me Crazy” coffee, flavored with caramel, vanilla and coffee liqueur — I guess I needed a change of pace? lol…

Tasting Starbucks’ Pike Place Roast
April 9, 2008

I had the chance to try Starbucks’ new “Pike Place Roast” tonight.
Not bad.
And considering that I’ve seldom ever had a cup of brewed coffee at Starbucks that was more than marginally drinkable, that’s a tremendous improvement.

Making Cmd-K = Search in Safari
April 9, 2008
Maybe I’m one of the few die-hard Firefox users on OS X (it doesn’t seem likely), but whenever I use Safari, it always drives me nuts that Cmd-K doesn’t go to Search.
Fortunately, it’s easy to fix.
Go to System Preferences, Keyboard & Mouse, Keyboard Shortcuts, and press the little “+” sign in the lower left to add a new shortcut. Select Safari.app as the Application, enter “Google Search…” as the Menu Title, and press Cmd-K in the Keyboard Shortcut field.
Click “add” and you’re all done.

The Pirate’s Dilemma
April 9, 2008

This is an absolutely brilliant video.
Matt Mason, author of The Pirate’s Dilemma – How Youth Culture is Reinventing Capitalism at the Medici Summit last month, discussing that the only useful way to compete against piracy is to adopt the pirates’ marketing strategy.
The money quote — “If throwing lawsuits at your fans becomes a core component of your business model, you no longer have a good business model. Unless you’re a lawyer.”

Eye-Fi Wireless SD Photo Memory Card – Review
April 9, 2008

I’m not much of a photographer.
It’s not that I don’t occasionally find things I want to take a picture of, it’s just that I seldom think about it far enough in advance to be sure I’ve got everything rounded up, the battery in my camera charged, etc. to be ready when the opportunity strikes.
Similarly, after I take some pictures, it’s a hassle to gather up the data cables, memory card readers or whatever other gear is required to get them onto my computer so I can deal with them. (Yeah, I’m the guy that used to go in to have a roll of film developed with photos from 12 events over 3 years on it).
That’s where the Eye-Fi card is brilliant. It won’t automatically charge my camera for me, but it does make dealing with pictures once I take them dirt simple.

Battlestar Galactica – The beginning of the end
April 5, 2008

If it absolutely has to be the last season of Battlestar Galactica (and really, it’s time), then we’re off to a good start with last night’s season premier.
I’ll spare everybody the spoilers at this point, but I can’t resist posting this (relatively spoiler free) clip…
If you missed it, the entire episode is up at Hulu (which is turning out to be a lot cooler than most of us expected).
What Time Machine leaves behind
April 4, 2008

I mentioned earlier that while I like Time Machine a lot, depending on it as your sole backup is rather fraught with peril.
This post on macosxhints gives another good reason — apparently some applications (including notably, VMWare) silently exclude data files from Time Machine.

Caffeine blocks cholesterol, Alzheimers

The BBC reports that a new study in the Journal of Neuroinflammation indicates that caffeine helps prevent high levels of cholesterol from causing dangerous substances to leak across the blood-brain barrier.
Cradlepoint PHS300 Personal Hotspot Review
April 3, 2008

Public access to Wi-Fi is getting better. In some places. There’s always Starbucks, but it isn’t exactly free, and it still is possible (but getting rarer) to find yourself more than 300 feet from one.
Still, even when it’s nearby doesn’t mean it’s convenient. I really wanted to stream video from SXSW a few weeks ago from my Nokia N95, but even if I found a hotspot, there was no easy way to navigate the login page.
Likewise the Eye-Fi card in my camera. I can log my iPhone into a hotspot, but it’s a pain in the butt.
