Apple AirTunes Remote Imminent?

May 17, 2005

It’s either a sign of a step in the direction I suggested the other day, or much ado over nothing, but HypnoticNetwork has found a possible precursor to an upcoming remote for Apple Express AirTunes.

If a firewall is configured, the first time the iTunes 4.8 loads up, a new message pops up. It tells you “…using a firewall software prevents you from… using a remote control for AirTunes.”…

…This is obviously a slip to the next upgrade to Airport Express, which will obviously contain a remote control — as this message didn’t pop up in the previous version of iTunes. Since nothing solid exists right now as an official Apple product (really, would Apple add this message in just for one kinda functioning third party remote?) — we know what’s coming shortly. In checking our connections on the sale’s floor, Airport Expresses have been in limited availability the last few weeks — meaning an upgrade is probably around the corner.

Well, maybe. The message would also be meaningful for users of the KeySpan remote (which functions more than “kinda”, at least for me) — whether Apple would bother adding such a message for the first time in 4.8 and for a third-party product probably depends a lot on how many support calls roll into AppleCare about the issue.

If it’s more than a couple, it’s cheaper to add the error message.

Which is not to say that a genuine Apple remote isn’t very likely to show up at some point, of course. This just may or may not be a sign of it.

Video iPod Imminent?Apparently the iTunes 4.8 update wasn't quite the yawner it first appeared to be. iTunes 4.8 users can now purchase and download music videos with select albums from iTunes Music Store. This has led to some fairly rampant speculation about whether a Video iPod is in the wings. Well, maybe... Certainly it's likely that the iPod will eventually go there, in order to remain in the high-end of the portable player market, if nothing else. I think it's likely we'll see some Apple encroachment on the living room first, however. Apple wants to widen its base as the premier provider of downloadable content as fast as possible, and let's face it, if you're going to peddle downloadable video, the 10...

Airport Express - Shipping & Discounted?Even though the Apple store stills shows a 3 - 4 week leadtime on the Airport Express with Airtunes, Amazon lists it as shipping on July 20th.  They also have it for $124.99—only a $5 discount from Apple’s price, but by the time you add in the free shipping and probable lack of sales tax for most purchasers, that almost adds up to real money… Apple Airport Express with Airtunes - $124.99 shipped Update: Airport Express Lowdown Related: Express Goodness -----...

Apple TV, Harmony Remote & Xantech Xtra LinkI'm as much of a gadget geek as the next blogger, but even I get fed up with clutter after awhile. The last go-round configuring my media center ended up with only the TV, speakers, and a Xantech Xtra Link sensor out in the room, and all of the componentry stashed in a closet behind. A Logitech Harmony 880 remote replaced the box o' remotes, and communicates with the gear in the closet via the Xtra Link (an infrared remote extender). Naturally, when I hooked up the Apple TV, it got wired into the closet too, with an IR emitter stickied to the front of it over the IR window. After getting the basics working, this made the next order...

Express GoodnessI don’t often blog about stuff that everyone else is blogging about, but the new Apple Airport Express ("with airtunes") is just a little too nifty to ignore. I need about three of these things, yesterday. Seriously, this is almost a stroke of genius—a router or a bridge, plus the ability to connect to stereos and printers.  I do have a need for another 802.11g bridge (or access point), but the additional goodies make me want another in the living room near the home theater, and another next to the printer that I’m tired of switching between the PC and my powerbook....  It’s easier to justify adding one for these purposes as you can always convince yourself that “hey! this...

Notes on Apple TVOne week in, more-or-less, and I've had time to form a few initial impressions. It pretty much "just works" -- the only problem I've had (and still have) is using the Harmony through the Xantech remote extender. Annoying, but livable until someone comes out with alternatives. The interface is still very nice, yet slightly crippled (in Apple's traditional fashion) by having an interface device that's short a button. There needs to be some way to do things like "adjust aspect ratio" and "view metadata", but even if such was built (or hacked) in, there's not a button on the remote to support it. Video playback could also benefit from "skip forward" and "skip backward" buttons (preferably with configurable durations). Having...
