Bobbing for Scumbags

June 17, 2003

RIAA Radar is a “Bookmarklet” that you can use when shopping for music on Amazon.Com.

To use, you simply drag the little Javascript applet to the links bar in your browser. When browsing albums, clicking on the bookmarklet will pop up a window indicating whether the record label that produced the album is or is not a member of RIAA, and thus whether some of the money you’re spending is going towards further eroding your rights.

One of the niftier uses of Amazon’s Web Services interface I’ve seen.

Alabama 3 - Intervention (The Futech Mixes) - ReviewOkay, anybody who knows my taste in music (or lack thereof) knows that I tend to collect remixes of Alabama 3 music like a dark shirt collects cat hair. Naturally, the quality of these mixes tend to vary from "Hey, that's pretty good!" to "Just how loaded were they?", but some of the consistently best remixes have come from a denizen of the Unofficial Alabama 3 Forum named Futech. While most of us A3 fans are anxiously awaiting the new studio album, due out someday fairly soon with any luck, Futech has put together 8 of his best remixes into an album, which he's titled "Intervention". He's even done up cover art. While this is far from official (and far...

Free Music Works for WilcoXeni Jardin writes in Wired about Wilco's "suprising" success. It's becoming a fairly common story -- artist gets shat upon by label, artist says "screw it" and puts out a solid representative sample of their music online, artist finds later commercial releases gobbled up by fans. In this case, they even raised $15K for charity from people who still wanted to pay for the material they released for free. What a concept -- let people hear some of the band's good stuff (not just some not-ready-for-album samples) for free, and they're more willing to buy stuff. Nothing new here, mind you -- it just used to be called "radio play". Except of course that several whole species of moneygrubbers evolved...

The Dawn of Legit Music DownloadsWell, iTunes Music Store on Windows has cost me a bunch of money so far… I like the organization, the samples, the ability to see related artists and everything—it was very easy to end up with a huge laundry list of backlist stuff that I’ve been meaning to acquire and add to my library, and so I broke down and acquired some of it. Not from iTunes Music Store, mind you… iTunes doesn’t share the iPod nicely (to put it mildly) with J. Rivers Music Center, which is by far my favorite piece of music organizing and iPod handling software. That particular pain in the ass, combined with having to deal with the music being in a different format (AAC)...

New Alabama 3 Album and Tour Alabama 3, the “music industry’s best kept secret”, has just announced the dates for their new tour, in support of their soon-to-be-released new album, “Outlaw". w00t!  A new album, and a new tour!  Unfortunately, the tour isn’t coming within 5,000 miles of me, but hey, I can still enjoy it vicariously… As always, you can find more details about this, like all things Alabama 3, at Free A3 - The unofficial Alabama 3 forum. London Calls Back Still more new music that doesn’t put money in the RIAA’s pocket.  Not to be outdone by Dangermouse and the Grey Album (and all of its spinoffs),CultureDeluxe and GetYourBootlegOn have pulled a group effort and have remixed the classic Clash album, London Calling. The result, London Booted isn’t free—it’s donationware. Pick one of the charities at the top of the page, and donate whatever you can.  Once you’ve done that, you can proceed to the download area and grab as many or as few of the 19 tasty tracks and 6 bonus tracks as you like. I’ve only gotten to listen to a few bits and pieces so far, but what I’ve heard is excellent.  Check it out! -----...
