Bodum Pavina Double-Wall Tumblers

July 9, 2005

Bodum Pavina Double-Wall TumblerSince I was downtown on business the other day, I figured I’d drop in the downtown Apple Store (I usually go to their store in one of the suburban malls.)

An Apple Store is usually an expensive enough experience for me (mysterious minor iPod problem not solved, another bag full of accessories bought *sigh*), but in the height of cruelty, someone decided to put a Bodum store right next to it…

I’m a serious sucker for Bodum’s coffee and tea wares… I love all of it, and have too much of it…

I went in (ostensibly) to buy a replacement for a broken Assam Tea Press, but we all know how that works. I did manage to narrowly avoid buying an electric vacuum brewer, and was only briefly tempted by the combination espresso maker / work of art, but I ended up with a pair of their Pavina tumblers, and yet another insulated travel French press mug…

Plus a new Tea Press, of course.

The Pavina tumblers are amazing things…. Hand-blown, from “laboratory grade borosilicate glass”, the insulating gap (air? vacuum?) keeps hot drinks seriously hot for a very long time (and I suppose cold drinks equally cold), and yet they never vary from cool to the touch.

Okay, so any thermos can do that… But can it do it with the coffee or tea appearing to float in mid-air in something that looks as fragile as a soap bubble?

I’m scared to death of breaking these things — delicate items are usually in trouble around me, although the borosilicate glass makes them a lot tougher than they look.

I couldn’t not buy them…

These things come in various sizes, from roughly “espresso cup” to “iced tea glass”, and may be pretty close to the ultimate cup to serve your caffeinated treat in…

At least when company is around.

(My constant everyday companion is a much-abused 14oz. stainless steel Nissan thermos travel cup. Judging from the dents and dings and general “been through a war-zone” appearance it has, I’ll probably stick with it when it’s just me.)

Aren’t those insulated glasses the prettiest things? I seriously want some. I saw these on HGTV covering the 2005 Home & Housewares Show. The thing I want the most is the double walled tea press. They really do keep things hot, eh? Cool. Heh.

BTW, that Pavina link doesn’t work.

Thanks for catching the broken link; it should be fixed now.

I haven’t seen the double-walled tea press; I’m on my second Assam press, and my only real problem with it (other than my teens breaking it) is that it doesn’t stay hot enough; I’d love to see a double-walled version of it.

Mine came in today! Brewed up a double cappucino in one. Excellent!
