Capturing Streams

May 6, 2003

I’d mentioned that in the release configuration, StreamRipper won’t rip a Live365 stream.  Which requires a little reading between the lines, but not much…

Meanwhile over on the Mac, I’ve just discovered Audio Hijack Pro, which appears to be able to capture anything that iTunes (or most anything else using the audio system) is playing.  Does this mean that it also gets around the digital rights management issues with Apple’s new music sales?

Hmmm….

I suppose if it would work for that, it probably would also work for Audible books, which use the same format…

Hmmm….

Anyone know of similar functionality on the PC side of the fence?

(Skipping the whole peer-to-peer discussion quagmire, when I purchase an audio selection of any kind, I don’t really care about copying it to pass around a zillion copies, but I =do= care that I can listen to it where I want to—on my PC, on the Mac, on one of the other PCs in the house, on my handheld, in my car, etc.  It’s expected that if I buy a CD I can play it on any CD player, I don’t want to be treated any differently just because I opted not to buy the round piece of Lexan with my selection.)

Record Streaming AudioCapturing audio streams appears to be a little easier on the Mac than on the PC. Does this defeat the new Apple music DRM scheme? Favorite Shoutcast StreamsFor me, getting things done often requires proper musical support… While my local collection is fairly extensive, occasionally I get tired of listening to what I’ve been listening to, and don’t feel like taking the time to build a new playlist… When that happens, it’s time to turn to a decent Shoutcast stream… Here are my recent favorites: SomaFM: Listener Supported, Commercial Free Internet Radio - six different streams, each in three rates.  Groove Salad, Secret Agent, Drone Zone, indiepop rocks, cliqhop idm and Beat Blender. My favorite band, Alabama3 (known as A3 in the US, aka “that Soprono’s theme song band") has a great new site up.  As well as some kick-ass flash work and a generous sample of...

New TVersity Streams Video to XBox 360I loves me some TVersity. I've been using this excellent freeware UPNP AV server for awhile to serve up content to my various digital media players, and frankly, it works better than anything else I've tried. It not only serves up video, audio files and pictures, but it's quite capable of transcoding virtually any odd-format video to a format that can be understood by your media player (it detects the player type and has a reasonably up-to-date understanding of what the majority of players support). The latest version of TVersity has now hit the streets, and it includes support for On the fly transcoding of video to WMV for the Xbox 360 (it's supported audio and images on the 360...

Using iMovie to Crack iTMS Encryption?Somebody’s gonna have some ‘splaining to do in Cupertino if this is true… Mac Network News is reporting on claims that a German tech site (macnews.de) is claiming that Apple’s own iMovie can be used to remove FairPlay DRM encryption on songs purchased via the iTunes Music Store. So far, this is sounding like one of those “friend of a friend of a friend” stories, but I’m sure it won’t be long before somebody has this translated and tested. Given Apple’s hissy fit over Hymn (formerly “PlayFair") and the ongoing fight with Real over FairPlay on the iPod, this would be more than a skosh embarassing if it turned out to be the real deal. Update: This apparently is just...

The Ultimate iPod Accessory Like everybody else, I’ve been hearing all of the talk for the last few days about the “iCheap”—a rumored sub-$500 Mac (ThinkSecret) that will supposedly be announced at MacWorld Expo next month. "With iPod-savvy Windows users clearly in its sights, Apple is expected to announce a bare bones, G4-based iMac without a display at Macworld Expo on January 11 that will retail for $499." This obviously seems like a good idea (and long overdue), but I didn’t really think about the positioning of this until last night. I was having a conversation with my oldest, who was getting ready to go, notebook in hand, to help one of his friends who had a new Xmas-gift 20gb iPod. It turns...
