Civil Liberties Mugged

October 19, 2005

For those of you feeling a bit iffy about your civil liberties these days, Acorn has a set of “Disappearing Civil Liberties” mugs

Freedom of speech and the press — gone. Protection from unreasonable searches and seizures — vanished. Speedy and public trial — pfft. Pour in a hot beverage and watch the Bill of Rights disappear.

On the other hand, I suppose you can watch your rights come back as your coffee or tea cools…

Or use it to drink a nice chilled alcoholic beverage and have no more worries…

(via BoingBoing, who notes that much like the Bill of Rights, these mugs are much more fragile than they look)

There are many different types of mugs available, so here are a few tips to consider before you purchase one. (By Gary Gresham) Travel mugs are offered in both stainless steel and plastic with plastic being the least expensive. Even though stainless steel initially costs more, it will give you much better value for your money. Plastic mugs can break when dropped and they don't keep your coffee or tea hot nearly as long as the stainless mugs. You can expect superior performance from a stainless steel travel mug keeping your coffee or tea hot for about an hour....

3 Simple Tips For Making Perfect CoffeeWant to brew the perfect cup of coffee? Here are 3 simple tips that will make a difference in every single cup you drink. Tip #1 Clean Coffee Pot A clean pot is essential and can make a world of difference in the taste of your coffee. Old oils from previous batches of coffee and soap residue left on the pot makes coffee taste bad. Baking soda and water work well for cleaning coffee mugs and pots. Be sure to rinse extra good so no residue is left behind. Tip #2 Clean Filtered Water The water you use for your coffee will affect the taste more than anything. Coffee is 99% water so use clean filtered or bottled water free...

Mirage - Espressonistic EspressoKees van der Westen Espressonistic Works BV designs and produces this line of visually stunning espresso machines. More than a little too big for home use, these things are absolutely beautiful sculptures of chrome and stainless steel... There is also a section on the site with pictures of custom one-off units and earlier designs. I don't know how good an espresso these things produce (actually, looking at the pictures and the specs, I expect that they probably can produce damn fine espresso), but how ever good it is, it has to be at least 10% better just from watching it come out of such a magnificent machine... Oh Bother…It turns out that Disney is (so far) on the losing end of an intellectual property rights dispute over Winnie the Pooh. Apparently the rights they thought they bought from the Milne heirs in 1961 were actually assigned by Milne to another party in 1930. They potentially stand to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in unpaid royalties. Of course, they might not have had a problem if Milnes work had been allowed to go into public domain, as it would have had not Disney and other organizations lobbied hard to prevent such things from happening...
