Australian for “Battery Charger”

FIRE authorities said today a Perth man was lucky to escape unharmed after his explosive attempt to recharge his mobile phone battery - in a microwave oven.

Firefighters were called to the man’s home in suburban Scarborough last night after the battery exploded inside the oven, causing smoke to pour out of the appliance.

Fire and Emergency Services district officer Alan Riley said the man was lucky not to have been injured in the incident, which caused about $200 damage to the microwave.

“It’s a timely reminder to people not to put things in the microwave other than food - and this includes phone batteries or using your microwave to dry your clothes,” Mr Riley said.

Grape Balls of FireSince a lot of people seem to wander on here for the “don’t microwave your peanut butter” story, I figured I’d share this with everybody—the Physics inside a Microwave Oven page. This site is full of a lot of things you should never, ever do with your microwave oven, many of them with video of the excitement.  Highlights include lighting a lightbulb, crisping a CD, and (my personal favorite) generating balls of flaming plasma from split grapes… Kids, don’t try this at home. -----...

Treo 650 Battery Drain IssueI'm glad I'm not the only person having problems with massive battery drains on my Treo 650 after updating to the 1.12 firmware (Sprint version) -- misery loves company. The symptoms appear to be rapid battery drain, serious heat (in fact, when I first noticed the problem I'd just yanked the phone (in my Vaja case) out of my pocket because I literally thought it was burning my leg), and the green "network activity" arrows on full time. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any sort of consensus as to why some people have the problem, or more importantly, how to fix it. Various suggestions have included re-updating the firmware (making sure that the battery is at 100% charge beforehand),...

Lightning in a bottleAs a public service, here’s our Important Safety Tip of the Day. Do NOT microwave peanut butter. At least not in the jar… One of my offspring labors under the misapprehension that peanut butter needs to be refrigerated.  This of course results in peanut butter that cannot be spread on ordinary mortal bread without ripping, shredding and tearing it.  It also makes it damn difficult to get the last of it out of the bottom of the jar. Being struck by a stray thought (and nearly knocked comatose, apparently) a bit ago while attempting to do just that, I figured “Hey!  Let’s just pop it in the microwave and nuke it for a few seconds!” It works for over-frozen ice...

Treo 650 Battery Drain Follow-UpThere still appears to be no fix in site for the massive battery drain problem on Treo 650 with 1.12 firmware that a lot of people (including me) have been experiencing. In the meantime, though, here's something that has kinda-sorta helped for me... The problem appears to be once a network connection is being made, under some circumstances some 1.12 Treos never seem to disconnect on their own. In my case, once I fired up Chatter, you could almost watch the battery drain before your eyes. As a result, I'm now only running Chatter "on-demand". I've got it bound to a hardware button, and when I press the button it launches, connects, and grabs mail. When I'm done checking mail,...

Doctor Who coming to US after allWell, it looks like there's a little Doctor Who love for American viewers after all. Russell T Davies, Head Writer and Executive Producer told us: "The Doctor's made all sorts of journeys in Time and Space, but this is one of his most exciting yet! I'm a huge fan of the SCI FI Channel, and I'm delighted that Doctor Who is appearing on a channel that supports and enhances the entire genre." "With its rich history of imaginative storytelling, Doctor Who is a true sci-fi classic," stated Thomas P. Vitale, SCI FI's Senior Vice President, Programming & Original Movies. "We're excited to add the show to our lineup." Commenting on the deal Candace Carlisle, Senior Vice President, BBC Worldwide Americas,...
