Consumer Reports Hearts Mickey Dee’s

February 8, 2007

Dear God, this is one of the signs of the apocalypse, isn’t it?

Apparently Consumer Reports picked McDonalds as having the best coffee, at least in comparison to Burger King, Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks.

God knows, I’ve said enough bad things about Starbucks, but the day you can’t beat out McDonald’s coffee, it’s time to hang it up and admit you know far more about selling milk than brewing coffee.

As for Consumer Reports, I won’t be joining them for a mug of joe anytime soon, but I would be willing to try some of whatever they were smoking that day…

Gano CoffeeAmidst all of the recent reports on how healthy coffee is in general, Slashfood has an article up on a new craze -- "Gano Coffee" A mix of coffee beans and mushrooms to help combat diabetes, high blood pressure and 'other diseases that plague our society today.' The producer markets a variety of products which contain the 'life changing, life enhancing' ingredient Ganoderma Lucidum, including the world's first healthy coffee. Ganoderma is known as 'the miraculous king of herbs' and provides an extensive list of health benefits including increased energy and vigor. Ganoderma has history dating back in the Oriental culture for over 2,000 years and is more powerful than Ginseng. Coffee & Mushrooms? Brrr... Okay, it doesn't sound quite...

Starbucks Barista Equipment Sale A little birdie told me today that Starbucks is having another big sale on their Barista coffee equipment next week -- starting Wednesday, March 23rd, in fact. If you're a regular reader of this site, you're probably aware that while I'm not a terribly big fan of Starbucks' coffee (over-roasted, over-priced, and served overly tarted-up, in general), I do happen to be quite fond of their Barista coffee makers. They actually work well, and wonder-of-wonders (for consumer grade coffee makers) they actually brew at around 190 degrees, which produces a proper cup of coffee. So I'm seriously thinking about a new coffee maker. My oldest has been wanting to swipe a morning cup from my beloved Barista Aroma Quattro,...

Coffee & Antioxidants Revisited? In response to some of the news reports that I quoted awhile back regarding coffee and antioxidants, someone was kind enough to send a link to this article. There are two reasons why this is so misleading. The first is that in analyzing the antioxidant content of coffee, Professor Vinson included antioxidants which are “hidden in sugar molecules.” Sugar molecules? If you dig deep enough into the rash of articles about this great “scientific breakthrough” you'll discover that Vinson himself admits that “most of the antioxidants” in coffee are indeed “hidden in sugar molecules.” Ok, so if you don’t dump a bunch of sugar and milk into your coffee you won’t be getting much, if any antioxidants. But, let’s not...

Starbucks to buy more African coffeeIf you get your caffeine fix from Starbucks, apparently you're soon to be drinking more African coffee.... Starbucks plans to raise its coffee purchases from Africa, although the bulk of supply will continue to come from Latin America, an executive with the world’s largest coffee retailer said on Sunday. Starbucks plans to buy more African coffee (MSNBC) I've not had a vast amount of African coffees (other than the occasional bit of Etheopian Harrar), so I'm wondering what all we can expect in the way of new tastes... Or if they'll even do variatels, or instead just add these into some of their blends in place of similar tasting varieties... ...

So much for StarbucksWell, I managed to break my Starbucks' Barista Aroma. The "pour" button on the thermal carafe (which never went down terribly far anyway, making pouring a relatively slow experience) gave up the ghost; the top of the carafe lid came away from the bottom, and as a result, the button lost all of the spring tension. Since this also causes the "carafe is in place" button to not stick up properly, the whole thing announced itself early this morning by the coffee maker determining that the carafe was not in place, filling the grounds basket with hot water, and then proceeding to flood the kitchen counter with hot water and coffee grounds... Grrrr... Oh well, s*it happens. When I purchased...
