Death will not save you…

February 5, 2005

Apparently the RIAA now feels that dying isn’t a good enough excuse to not be sued for stealing music.

More here: RIAA sues the dead.

“Lawyers representing several record companies have filed suit against an 83-year old woman who died in December, claiming that she made more than 700 songs available on the internet…

…However the RIAA’s embarrassment doesn’t end there. Chianumba said that she had sent a copy of her mother’s death certificate to record company lawyers in response to an initial warning letter, over a week before the suit was filed.”

At what point will these sanctimonious @holes embarass themselves enough? It must give the average band a real warm feeling to be associated with people like this…

Grockster ruling.I've been trying to decide just what to say about the Grokster ruling, but I've been at a loss for words. Over the long haul, it's pretty clear that this isn't going to fix the RIAA or MPAA's obsolete business models. Over the short haul, however, the chilling effect that this could have on technology is massive. Mark Cuban thinks that the litigation environment is going to become extreme, and that the only people who are going to actually make money on all of this are the lawyers and the lobbyists. With the Grokster ruling, going forward, just how onerous will the protection language be for purchases of, or investments in digital technology ? Will it be enough for the...

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Vacation)Who says lawyers can’t have a sense of humor? Not the folks down in Whoville… Apparently last Friday, a lawyer in Dallas found that the counselor on the opposing bench had filed a vacation request with the court, and in a snit, demanded that the trial proceed at noon on Christmas eve.  The judge ignored him and granted the vacation request, after the opposing firm filed a detailed response with the court in the form of a parody of Dr. Seuss’s “How The Grinch Stole Christmas.” "The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! Now, please don’t ask why.  No one quite knows the reason. It could be that his arguments weren’t going quite right. It could be, perhaps that...

Bobbing for ScumbagsRIAA Radar is a "Bookmarklet" that you can use when shopping for music on Amazon.Com. To use, you simply drag the little Javascript applet to the links bar in your browser. When browsing albums, clicking on the bookmarklet will pop up a window indicating whether the record label that produced the album is or is not a member of RIAA, and thus whether some of the money you're spending is going towards further eroding your rights. One of the niftier uses of Amazon's Web Services interface I've seen. (via FreeA3)...

Maintaining your SSL Certificate From the “do as I say, not as I do” department... One certain kiss of death for an e-commerce site is to have a broken or expired SSL Certificate. If your certificate is allowed to expire, or if for some reason it does not match the name of your domain (perhaps you've changed domain names), or if it is installed incorrectly, the user's browser will put up a large dialog warning that the site may be insecure, that they should use caution, etc. As you can imagine, warnings that a site “may be insecure” go along with asking for sensitive information about like seeing a group of people with ski masks and handguns go along with wanting to make...
