Favorite Shoutcast Streams

May 2, 2003

For me, getting things done often requires proper musical support… While my local collection is fairly extensive, occasionally I get tired of listening to what I’ve been listening to, and don’t feel like taking the time to build a new playlist… When that happens, it’s time to turn to a decent Shoutcast stream… Here are my recent favorites:

SomaFM: Listener Supported, Commercial Free Internet Radio - six different streams, each in three rates.  Groove Salad, Secret Agent, Drone Zone, indiepop rocks, cliqhop idm and Beat Blender.

My favorite band, Alabama3 (known as A3 in the US, aka “that Soprono’s theme song band”) has a great new site up.  As well as some kick-ass flash work and a generous sample of free MP3s, the site features a Live365 stream chock full of old and new album stuff, some excellent remixes, and the occasional piece of old school country.  If you’re not familiar with Alabama3, expect smokey, whiskey-soaked vocals, gospel & blues influences, all done up as cutting edge house music.  They call it “Acid House Country”, but it rather defies description—you’ve got to experience it. If you enjoy A3, you may also want to check out FreeA3.com , the Unofficial Alabama 3 Website…

If you enjoy Shoutcast streams, you might also want to check out StreamRipper, a tool to capture (and in many cases split out component songs) from Shoutcast streams. Since a rather nasty cease and desist action, StreamRipper does not support Live365 streams in its released configuration.

Gotta love Open Source software…

Do you have a favorite Shoutcast stream or tool?  You’re welcome to leave a comment (or trackback) and share it…

    Hi Chuck.

Visited the SomaFM sight.  It appears there are some really great litening choices.  I downloaded winamp, but can’t get it to work.

Hey thanks for the link to A3!  I didn’t know which band was featured on the Soprano’s theme.

Radio 365 plug-in works however.  I don’t know what the deal is with winamp.

Bill goldsmith does a great job over at Radio Paradise in the adult eclectic genre. bill also has created a very nice little web community. it’s the best station I’ve heard since wgrg. I also still run very low maintenance streams at jonesnose: http://shoutcast.jonesnose.com:8320 is the 320kbps stream. http://shoutcast.jonesnose.com:8128 is the 128kbps stream. I don’t do near the job bill does, but I’m working on improving the responsiveness of the system to its listener base in the background.

Streaming ChilloutI think I finally found a downbeat streaming music station that I like as much (if not more) than SomaFM’s Groove Salad—RadioMax’s Chillout & Ambient stream.  Shoutcast and Windows Audio streams up to 256kbps.  The Shoutcast stream (I didn’t check the other) has full metadata embedded in it, so you could use your favorite net radio capture software can at least know what you’re listening to. So far, the playlist has a few clinkers in it, but not terribly many… -----...

Capturing StreamsI’d mentioned that in the release configuration, StreamRipper won’t rip a Live365 stream.  Which requires a little reading between the lines, but not much… Meanwhile over on the Mac, I’ve just discovered Audio Hijack Pro, which appears to be able to capture anything that iTunes (or most anything else using the audio system) is playing.  Does this mean that it also gets around the digital rights management issues with Apple’s new music sales? Hmmm.... I suppose if it would work for that, it probably would also work for Audible books, which use the same format… Hmmm.... Anyone know of similar functionality on the PC side of the fence? (Skipping the whole peer-to-peer discussion quagmire, when I purchase an audio selection...

Woke Up This Morning & Got a Mention in the NYTAlabama 3, that is -- AKA "A3" in the US, AKA "The UK's best live band" AKA "The greatest band nobody's ever heard of". Apparently the New York Times' Virginia Heffernan managed to hear of them, and decided to talk a bit about them, in place of the last season of The Sopranos, the show that almost put them on the map in the US... As Mr. Lucas explains: “So you know, although ‘The Sopranos’ is certainly one of my favorite programs, I can tell you that Alabama 3 got royally screwed by HBO/Chase & co. out of getting an ongoing weekly credit for their theme song on the program, which would have helped their currently no-profile career a great...

Webjay - Free Music PlaylistsThere is a lot of great music on the web, yours free for the listening—if you can find it.  Now Webjay let’s listeners create playlists of their favorite free MP3s from all over the ‘net—you can listen to playlists made by others, or create your own (public or private).  It’s a great way to discover new music, and to share music that you’ve discovered with others. Here are a few of my favorite free MP3s to get you started… Enjoy! ...

Record Streaming AudioCapturing audio streams appears to be a little easier on the Mac than on the PC. Does this defeat the new Apple music DRM scheme?
