FeedDemon Supports Podcasts

December 4, 2004

If you’re in need of a PodCast client for Windows, apparently FeedDemon now has support for PodCasts and other RSS enclosures. It also handles syncing to iPods and other “mountable” media players.

Since PodCasts are currently the only reason I’d use a dedicated RSS client instead of Bloglines, and FeedDemon is by far my favorite Windows RSS client, this is great news…

iTunes 4.9 with podcasts (sorta)Apple has released iTunes 4.9. Unless you've been in a hype-proof cave somewhere for the past two weeks, you probably won't be suprised to learn that it does indeed come with podcast support. Well, half-assed podcast support, anyway. Apple offers a list of 3000 or so "blessed" podcasts via the iTunes Music Store, or you can add a podcast manually, if you can figure out the interface. There is no support for doing some of the handy things a decent podcast client (like iPodderX) can do, like choose a playlist to automatically add a program to, convert it to AAC, or make it bookmarkable (the latter being exceedingly useful for spoken word podcasts.) Even the stuff that is supported appears...

“EyeTV To Go” Supports iTunes, PSPAlso just for Macs, Elgato Systems has announced an update to their EyeTV PVR system that allows you to export video to iTunes, the Sony PlayStation Portable and other mobile devices. EyeTV "to go", a solution by Elgato that allows Mac owners to conveniently export EyeTV recordings to Sony’s Playstation Portableâ„¢ (PSP) and other mobile devices. EyeTV 1.8 is fully compatible with the new Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and includes support for the state-of-the-art video codec H.264 in QuickTime 7. Newly added iTunes® support provides users with even more options for increasing their personal libraries. Audio tracks can be exported from EyeTV recordings and effortlessly imported into an iTunes® music library, creating direct access to television and film soundtracks.......

Choosing RSS ReadersJeremy Zawodny mentions that he’s recently switched to Bloglines.  Me too. I’ve been very pleased with FeedDemon on Windows over the past six months or so, and have been disappointed that I can’t seem to find a similar RSS reader on the Mac.  The biggest thing I miss is the ability to follow a link (either to the actual entry or to another site) within the same window (or on a new tab), without spawning additional windows.  Using Bloglines in Safari works quite similarly, however.  I can right-click (okay, I use a two button mouse on a Mac, which probably makes me a heretic) and open links in new tabs, which is just fine.  The (lack of) speed takes a...

Bloglines Toolkit for FirefoxTalk about two great things that go well together… Lately I’ve been beating the drum rather hard for Firefox, and I’ve mentioned previously that I am a big fan of Bloglines.  Now Chad Everett has brought them together with the Bloglines Toolkit for Firefox, a Firefox extension that adds a lot of Bloglines functionality. In addition to a little Bloglines icon in the lower right corner (which takes you to Bloglines/myblogs - nice, but just another bookmark), if you right click that icon you can enable a context menu which lets you add a subscription in Bloglines for the site you are reading (provided it supports RSS autodiscovery), or view blog pages that have links to the current page. Nifty....
