Forbes journalist predicts own lynching

October 28, 2005

In the cover story of the latest Forbes magazine, Daniel Lyons goes on the assault against blogs, calling them “the prized platform of an online lynch mob spouting liberty but spewing lies, libel and invective”.

Things go downhill from there, with a few facts interspersed with a level of exaggeration and obvious misstatements that would make the most bombastic blogger blush, and a sidebar on “how to punish bloggers that annoy you fighting back”.

As you can imagine, the reaction from the blogging community is more than a little hostile.

Memeorandum is doing a nice job of recapping the play-by-play here.

What was it Gandhi said?

“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”

Oh yeah, that was it…

Memeorandum - mapping the live webI guess I've been living under a rock the past few weeks, since somehow I missed the buzz on tech.memeorandum. Memeorandum itself has been out for a year or so, mapping the doings on the political sites (which I tend to avoid like herpes), and so I missed it when they came out with the tech version a few weeks ago. What Memeorandum does -- and appears to do awfully well -- is put together conversations off of diverse sites -- blogs and "traditional" journalism alike -- into a coherent thread, and then bubble the hot topics to the top. Wired recently posted nice writeup about Memeorandum -- "If you read blogs, you know that there is this conversation and...

Practicing what you preachIn light of all of the various "how to get good blog traffic" articles that have been hurtling around lately, Jack of All Blogs has put up a list of the The Ten Evilest and Mostly Unethical Blogging Hacks. My favorite one was this one: #2 Hack Elitists It’s always better to piss people off than it is to cozy up to them. I have found that no one needs new blog friends but what all these stuck up folks need is someone to throw stones at them. A few really great people to piss off are Joi Ito, Jason Calacanis, Nick Denton, Jeremy Wright, Jason Kottke, and Jen Chung. They get upset and tell all there friends to not...

Attention ZombieMart Shoppers…Meanwhile, at Kuro5hin, “dr zeus” is tired of ill-prepared people in zombie movies, and has decided to post a mini-manual on how to survive a zombie attack.  His hot tip?  Capture and defend a WalMart—Plenty of prepared foods and containers to store water, and you can use garden center supplies to plant the store for the long haul… "First things first, you have to know your enemy. Zombies come in two flavors: fast and slow. Fast are definitely cool, but you’ll need more than a baseball bat and a pair of running sneakers to survive that zombie attack. Slow zombies - well why the heck would anyone die from a slow zombie? If you can’t get away from a slow...

One way to start a blogDebbie Weil at BlogWrite for CEOs points readers to a series by Joe Carter on How To Start A Blog. While it's not necessarily the approach that I'd recommend, it's still a very interesting read. Joe's focus is more on "how to get attention from the blogging community as a standalone blog" than it is on how to start a business blog. If you're going to use a blog as part of your business web site promotional efforts, then it probably pays to devote a bit more attention to how the pages and archives are structured, paying attention to blending it smoothly into the rest of your site, how it is designed to bring in search engine traffic for your...
