Free Music Blogs

May 3, 2004

If you’re looking for more sources for great free music, you could do far worse than check out the great collection of mp3 blogs in this entry from Close Your Eyes.

Some of these sites spend a lot of time tracking limited time releases, reviewing new releases, etc, and there’s a little something here for everyone — indie, j-pop, electronica, etc.

Enjoy

Delicious and FirefoxI finally managed to blow up my Firefox extensions the other day, probably the result of having been adding and deleting and adding and deleting and adding and deleting extensions since way back in the early betas.  So, I ended up just deleting my Firefox settings folder (after saving my bookmarks) and starting over. The good news is that it got rid of a lot of cruft that I really wasn’t using (and hey, that really does speed things up).  The bad news is that I’m now going through cycles of remembering yet another extension I need (usually right when I need it) and adding it and restarting.  I’m also finding some nifty new upgrades and alternatives though, so it’s...

Free Chill-OutHere's a double-treat for fans of chill-out, trip-hop, lounge & related music... First up, there's Theta States - Bedroom Music for Bedroom People -- a collection of cd-length MP3 mixes of down-tempo beats, abstract underground hip-hop, and various other tasty items. Around 21 hours worth of material, ready-to-download. So far, the ones I've listened to seem very listen-able, and will be much appreciated in my collection. I only wish they'd have left the individual cuts separate and tied them together with playlists, so that they could be further sliced and diced, but it's all free, which makes it tough to argue about it. (via del.icio.us) Next, MeFi also picked up "Bedroom Music" (chicken, egg, who knows?) and the discussion included...

Webjay - Free Music PlaylistsThere is a lot of great music on the web, yours free for the listening—if you can find it.  Now Webjay let’s listeners create playlists of their favorite free MP3s from all over the ‘net—you can listen to playlists made by others, or create your own (public or private).  It’s a great way to discover new music, and to share music that you’ve discovered with others. Here are a few of my favorite free MP3s to get you started… Enjoy! ...

Free Music Works for WilcoXeni Jardin writes in Wired about Wilco's "suprising" success. It's becoming a fairly common story -- artist gets shat upon by label, artist says "screw it" and puts out a solid representative sample of their music online, artist finds later commercial releases gobbled up by fans. In this case, they even raised $15K for charity from people who still wanted to pay for the material they released for free. What a concept -- let people hear some of the band's good stuff (not just some not-ready-for-album samples) for free, and they're more willing to buy stuff. Nothing new here, mind you -- it just used to be called "radio play". Except of course that several whole species of moneygrubbers evolved...
