Homicide: Life On The ‘Net

June 9, 2003

Homicide: Life on the StreetsI was recently out doing a little googling to find the music from the first season 2 episodes of The Wire, and happened to stumble on this site:

“Homicide: Links on the Sites”:http://members.aol.com/hlotslinks/

It didn’t suprise me that I found stuff on Homicide: Life on the Streets, as it and The Wire are like two peas in a Baltimore pod.

What did suprise me, though was that there’s still a very active fan base for Homicide—this site has five updates already this month.

For a show that was canceled three and a half years ago.

Wow.  If you were a Homicide fan, be sure to check it out.  It may not be the fanciest page on the ‘net, but it’s maintained with obvious loving care, chock-full of Homicide-related goodness, links to all things Homicide, plus a fair amount of material related to The Wire.

I was pleased to see that there is now a DVD set out for Seasons 1 & 2.  Only 13 episodes, but it’d make a nice break during summer rerun season…

The Shield, The Wire, BoomtownOne side-effect of all of the war coverage, in addition to post February sweeps hiatus, is that it’s given me a chance to finish going through The Shield’s season one DVD set.  For those who haven’t seen it, The Shield is a seriously gritty cop show set in Los Angeles.  The show, and it’s anti-hero star, Michael Chiklis have gotten a substantial amount of critical acclaim, and is one of the few cop shows that gives a portrayal of the streets of LA that actually seems realistic to anyone who has been there.  I’m particularly fond of the complex morality tales and take-no-prisoners dialog that creator Shawn Ryan brings to the show.  No surprise, he’s yet another alumni of the...

Apple TV - A Year in the Life Being the unreconstructed Apple fanboy that I am, this month makes it officially one year that I've lived with an Apple TV -- and it's been an interesting year. Unlike some folks, I liked the Apple TV straight out of the box. The form factor (basically a half-height Mac Mini) was nice, it took five minutes to hook up to my home media system, and another five minutes to set up. Functionality wise, it was nice -- jacked into my surround sound system, it made a dandy player for my iTunes playlists, along with nice animations of images from iPhoto. Even better, it made a reasonable and useful tool for watching video podcasts, something I seldom do at my...

Dead Inside?Sometimes, I hate to be right... Showrunner Tim Minear has announced that it looks like it's all but over for The Inside, his so-dark-it-makes-you-twitch drama on Fox. Okay, gang, here's what I do know...While the network hasn't said to me that they won't order more episodes, it sure does shake out that way. On Thursday they needed to extend their options on the cast and decided not to. Considering it would have been chump change for them, it basically means we're done. I'm not ready to start hawking the 13 episode DVD set -- because I'm hoping it's gonna be a 15 episode set, including the two, you counted right, TWO! unaired pilots. I'm pretty convinced the same thing that...

When is a blog a blog? One of the frequently heard objections to adding a weblog to a small business website is that they don't want their site to look like a blog.  Of course, my standard reply is that it doesn't need to in order to have all of the same functionality.  This can work too well, however. Last night I ran into a directory of business related weblogs, and went along happily submitting this site.  Today I got a rejection, along with a note from the directory owner that I had a nice looking site, but they only link blogs... After chuckling a bit, I wrote him a reply thanking him for his consideration and, pointing out for whatever it's worth, that this site...

Gonzo - The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. ThompsonI've said it before and I'll say it again -- Hunter S. Thompson was an American Hero in the truest sense of the word. That's why I think it's particularly fitting that Gonzo is slated to open on July 4th*. There's a much high quality trailier available at Apple, but for those of you who can't be bothered, here's the YouTube version: * although I freely admit it'd be even better if it would open someplace you could smoke, drink Wild Turkey and set off fireworks (and handguns) (and howitzers) while you watched it. You know Doc would have wanted it that way. ...
