iPod Audiobook Guide

May 16, 2005

At iPodlounge, Kirk McElhearn has posted “The Complete Guide to iPod Audiobooks

This nice little write-up covers both purchasing and listening to audiobooks from Audible (via iTunes Music Store) and producing your own audiobook and making i bookmarkable.

I do a lot of the latter myself, but I still managed to learn a few things (among other things, I didn’t realize that making an audio bookmarkable automatically put it in the Music > Audiobooks menu; I always just find mine based on the playlist I’ve put them in.)

iTunes 4.8 ReleasedApple has released version 4.8 of iTunes for Mac and Windows. New features included are the ability to organize video clips within iTunes (but not send them to iPod Photos), settings for synchronizing your contacts and calendar with your iPod (requires OS X 10.4 (Tiger)) on Mac.) and presumably, support for some of the upcoming new international versions of iTunes Music Store. All in all, not much new, but then again there havn't been any new DRM-removal tools that they'll feel obligated to break in the last few weeks. (via iPodlounge)...

The Ultimate iPod Accessory Like everybody else, I’ve been hearing all of the talk for the last few days about the “iCheap”—a rumored sub-$500 Mac (ThinkSecret) that will supposedly be announced at MacWorld Expo next month. "With iPod-savvy Windows users clearly in its sights, Apple is expected to announce a bare bones, G4-based iMac without a display at Macworld Expo on January 11 that will retail for $499." This obviously seems like a good idea (and long overdue), but I didn’t really think about the positioning of this until last night. I was having a conversation with my oldest, who was getting ready to go, notebook in hand, to help one of his friends who had a new Xmas-gift 20gb iPod. It turns...

How to use a Windows iPod on a Mac I've got a rather large library of MP3s (don't start -- I spent a lot of time ripping and organizing my own rather extensive CD collection in order to enjoy my fair-use rights).  Since I want to enjoy said rights on whatever machine I happen to be working on, I leave the collection on a server so it’s available on machines through the house. Over time, my tool-of-choice has become J. River Media Center, the Swiss Army Knife of media tools.  It slices, it dices, it handles large libraries and actually has a decent iPod interface.  It’s also a Windows-only product. When I got the Powerbook, I had a minor dillema—why should I spend limited notebook space on music...

Hymn Step-By-Step GuideEngadget provides a step-by-step guide to using Hymn (formerly Playfair) to remove Apple's FairPlay Digital Rights Management (DRM) from songs purchased from iTunes Music Store (ITMS). Interestingly enough, to run Hymn on a Mac, you also need an iPod. Hymn on the PC does not require an iPod in order to access the keys, but only runs in command-line mode. Bear in mind that Hymn is only useful if you actually have legitimate rights to the song in iTunes to begin with (ie: you're the purchaser, or have been authorized by the purchaser), and the resulting DRM-less file still has all of your purchase information in it -- if it turns up on a P2P network somewhere, you should probably...

5 Ways to copy music OFF your iPod (Windows / Mac OS X)So, you've got music on your iPod that you don't have on your computer? It doesn't matter how you got in this predicament -- maybe you've lost a hard drive (or an entire computer), or you've accidently deleted just a little too much, and for one reason or another, you don't have the original source of the music. If any of that sounds familiar, the time to fix it is now -- before you lose your iPod (and your music), or iTunes manages to get set to automatically sync your entire library (its default state, if you have to re-install it) and starts deleting all of the songs it doesn't know about. Unfortunately, the standard tool for transferring music between...
