Irish Coffee — The Backstory…

March 19, 2005

I know I should have posted this in time for St. Pattys, but hey — coffee, irish whiskey and whipped cream are a good topic for any day…

In any event, Coffee and Tea did their homework, and researched the history of Irish Coffee, and provide it (along with a couple of recipes) here.

In honor of the day, or should I say honour, I’ll not only be wearin’ the green, but drinkin’ the Irish as well. Mug in hand, I went in search of the origins of the stuff.

National Coffee Ice Cream DayAccording to Morning Coffee & Afternoon Tea, it's National Coffee Ice Cream Day... Who knew? They have links to a lot of recipes for making various coffee-enhanced ice creams. I'm sorely tempted to try some of them, except that I'm allergic to dairy -- and it doesn't help that coffee ice cream (especially with some chocolate) is one of my weaknesses... Last but not least, Morning...

Flavoring your own coffeeFor those of you in a holiday mood, here are a couple of ideas to flavor up a more festive holiday brew at home. First, from Morning Coffee & Afteroon Tea is a recipe for making your own Christmas coffee by adding cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg to your brew. Next, from Martha Stewart is a suggestion to make holiday gift coffee by adding vanilla beans or other spices to freshly ground coffee. Both of these sound interesting, but I'm afraid I'm a purist at heart; I'm playing with a blending a few new (to me) single origin beans for a bit different espresso blend over the holidays......

Gano CoffeeAmidst all of the recent reports on how healthy coffee is in general, Slashfood has an article up on a new craze -- "Gano Coffee" A mix of coffee beans and mushrooms to help combat diabetes, high blood pressure and 'other diseases that plague our society today.'
