Running Windows SecurelyOver the past few weeks, I’ve written quite a bit on various Windows issues—Spyware, Viruses, and going to a more secure browser.  Even though those articles have scrolled off the front page, a lot of people are still looking for them, so this article will be a “living document” with links to all articles I write on the topic, and there will be a link to this on the right sidebar if you should need to refer back to it in the future. Windows Security Articles No. More. Excuses. - The very basics of securing a Windows computer, and why it’s important (to all of us) that you do so. Spyware and You. - The details of how and why...

Rip Internet Explorer out by the rootsIs making Firefox your default Windows browser not enough for you?  Would you feel better with a scorched earth solution, wiping out the last vestiges of Internet Exploder Explorer from your system? Well, it’s not for the faint of heart, but the folks over to Crackbaby have posted detailed instructions for editing the registry to COMPLETELY remove IE. Apparently Microsoft was so amazed that they had a technician call to find out exactly how it was done...  You’d think they’d know, wouldn’t you?  Apparently they also mentioned that they would NOT be putting out a tech note on how to do this, for “obvious reasons”....  Yeah, there’s a shocker… lol… Related: Running Windows Securely ...

Bloglines Toolkit for FirefoxTalk about two great things that go well together… Lately I’ve been beating the drum rather hard for Firefox, and I’ve mentioned previously that I am a big fan of Bloglines.  Now Chad Everett has brought them together with the Bloglines Toolkit for Firefox, a Firefox extension that adds a lot of Bloglines functionality. In addition to a little Bloglines icon in the lower right corner (which takes you to Bloglines/myblogs - nice, but just another bookmark), if you right click that icon you can enable a context menu which lets you add a subscription in Bloglines for the site you are reading (provided it supports RSS autodiscovery), or view blog pages that have links to the current page. Nifty....

Firefox 1.5 ReleasedFirefox 1.5 is now officially released. As I mentioned the other day, this version is a substantial improvement on the 1.0x versions -- which were in turn quite an improvement over most everything else. If you're currently using Firefox, you need to hop over and download the new version. If you're not currently using Firefox, then you're in for even more of a treat. If you're still using Internet Explorer, you may wish to take a few minutes to have your head examined and rescan your machine for viruses and spyware first... Firefox 1.5 - Rediscover the web...

IE Security hole worse than fearedJust to put a cherry on top of the whole "Firefox 1.5 has been released" thing, if you're still using Internet Explorer, you should go read this: IE Flaw Is Worse Than Expected. There's a lot of geek-talk on that page, but the upshot of it is, if you're a Windows user using Internet Explorer, any website you visit could be used by a malicious user to execute anything on your computer. Like reformat your drive. Or mail your Quicken account data to someone. There is no fix for this yet. Scary Stuff....
