National Coffee Ice Cream Day

September 6, 2005

According to Morning Coffee & Afternoon Tea, it’s National Coffee Ice Cream Day… Who knew?

They have links to a lot of recipes for making various coffee-enhanced ice creams. I’m sorely tempted to try some of them, except that I’m allergic to dairy — and it doesn’t help that coffee ice cream (especially with some chocolate) is one of my weaknesses…

Anyway, it all looks wonderful (particularly the Coffee Ice Cream Pie) — if you aren’t dairy-challenged, be sure to check it out!

Irish Coffee — The Backstory…I know I should have posted this in time for St. Pattys, but hey -- coffee, irish whiskey and whipped cream are a good topic for any day... Romance of CoffeeAs the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach once said, '"Ah! How sweet coffee tastes! Lovelier than a thousand kisses, sweeter far than muscatel wine!" Since its introduction to Paris in the late 17th century, romance has surrounded the coffee bean. Whether it was served to two lovers on a cobblestone street or enjoyed in front of an evening fire at home, coffee has stood the test of time as a luxury and comfort to couples around the world. (by: ARA Content) Jean de la Roque once wrote, "I had long been fascinated by the stories of my father who brought home to Marseilles some of the first coffee ever seen there … and by the enticingly exotic services used in...

Ethiopian Coffee CeremonyWherever coffee or tea are drank, they lend themselves to rituals, big or small. For tea, the definitive ritual is probably the Japanese tea ceremony. For coffee, we need look no further than the birthplace of the bean, where the coffee ceremony is an essential part of Ethiopian culture. Epicurean has a great article describing the Ethiopian coffee ceremony... The lady who is conducting the ceremony gently washes a handful of coffee beans on the heated pan, then stirs and shakes the husks away. When the coffee beans have turned black and shining and the aromatic oil is coaxed out of them, they are ground by a pestle and a long handled mortar. The ground coffee is slowly stirred into...

Drink Coffee & Lose Weight?Apparently coffee can help you lose weight, at least according to this article from INeedCoffee.com. They studied 10 older (65-80 yr) and 10 younger (19-26 yr) men who were moderate consumers of caffeine. Caffeine ingestion resulted in similar increases in both the old and young men for plasma caffeine levels; thus both young and old absorb caffeine equally well. Metabolic rate or energy expenditure increased similarly by 11% in young and 9.5% in the older men. According to the scientists, "older and younger men show a similar thermogenic response to caffeine ingestion, whereas older men show a smaller increase in fatty acid availability after a caffeine challenge. These metabolic differences are not related to alterations in norepinephrine kinetics or fat...
