Neither shaken nor stirred

April 15, 2005

The WSJ is reporting that Two Fifths of Americans have read a political blog.

Still no word on how many fifths would be required to get the rest of us to read the damn things.  (Buy me a handle of Tanquery, we’ll talk…)

Memeorandum - mapping the live webI guess I've been living under a rock the past few weeks, since somehow I missed the buzz on tech.memeorandum. Memeorandum itself has been out for a year or so, mapping the doings on the political sites (which I tend to avoid like herpes), and so I missed it when they came out with the tech version a few weeks ago. What Memeorandum does -- and appears to do awfully well -- is put together conversations off of diverse sites -- blogs and "traditional" journalism alike -- into a coherent thread, and then bubble the hot topics to the top. Wired recently posted nice writeup about Memeorandum -- "If you read blogs, you know that there is this conversation and...

PolitricksGod knows, I’ve strongly avoided inflicting my personal politics on folks reading this site.  There are a metric shitload of political blogs out there, and people don’t need to come here to find my take on things.  Besides, my political leanings tend to annoy most avid consumers of realpolitik, as they can pretty much be summed up as “Both sides owe favors to the same people.  All the rest of it is noise meant to distract people into believing they have an actual choice that will affect the outcome of any significant decision.” So, I mostly don’t talk about it.  On the other hand, having just been asked for the bazillionth time whether I watched the debates (hey, are you...

The War at HomeI try to keep this blog about as non-political as they come. Not because I don't have any personal interest in politics, but because there are plenty of places you can go to read or talk about politics; I can't see a reason to provide another. On the other hand, even though I was just an occasional visitor, New Orleans was near and dear to me, and I couldn't not pass this article along. Did New Orleans Catastrophe Have to Happen? On June 8, 2004, Walter Maestri, emergency management chief for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana; told the Times-Picayune: "It appears that the money has been moved in the president's budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq, and I...

One way to start a blogDebbie Weil at BlogWrite for CEOs points readers to a series by Joe Carter on How To Start A Blog. While it's not necessarily the approach that I'd recommend, it's still a very interesting read. Joe's focus is more on "how to get attention from the blogging community as a standalone blog" than it is on how to start a business blog. If you're going to use a blog as part of your business web site promotional efforts, then it probably pays to devote a bit more attention to how the pages and archives are structured, paying attention to blending it smoothly into the rest of your site, how it is designed to bring in search engine traffic for your...
