New Toshiba e830 Pocket PC?

August 1, 2004

Apparently if Toshiba is leaving the Pocket PC market (or the market in the US, depending on which story you’re listening to), they’re taking the overland route… This link to the FCC’s web site appears to show the FCC approval label for a Bluetooth & Wi-Fi equipped Toshiba e830.

Current rumours have it using a 520 MHz processor, 128 meg of memory, with a 4” VGA screen, and both CF and SD slots.

As usual, the full twenty-five cent grinching on the topic is available at Brighthand and Pocket PC Thoughts.

Official US Update for Toshiba e-800Two months after it was released for everybody else, Toshbia has officially released the Windows Mobile 2003 SE update for US e-800s. According to posts on Brighthand, it’s apparently the same version released everywhere else back in May, albeit bunded with a couple of updated applications. Why’d it take two months?  Go figure. At least this means that if you put this on your e-800 and it happens to blow up later, you can still send it for warranty service—there were reports that if you had the non-US upgrade on your SE, they’d refuse to support it under warranty.  Several people were told that it would damage their PDA.  Apparently this problem got better, even though it’s the same version…...

Dirt Cheap VGA PDAHarry (who probably ought to have a blog, but doesn’t my mistake—looks like he’s working on it) informs me that CompUSA is selling out their Toshiba e800s (e800 and e805 are the same model, just with a bit different bundled software) for under $400.  I’ve also heard that Best Buy is selling theirs in the $350 - $400 range. This is a great price for a spectacular device, particularly with the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition upgrade available for download.  We’re talking a Pocket PC with a 4” screen, that runs 640 x 480, portrait or landscape, for those programs that you want it to (e-book readers, web browsers, remote desktop), and standard 320 x 240 for everything you’d rather...

Windows Mobile 2003 SE and the Toshiba e800 — Almost Ready for PrimetimeI’ve been ignoring the Windows Mobile 2003 SE (what, were they all out of short catchy names? Was Windows Mobile 2004 just too obvious?) update, even though it’s been available for the Toshiba e800/e805 for two or three weeks now.  When it first came out, it appeared to have too many unresolved issues, and I just didn’t have time to live on the bleeding edge with it.  In real simple terms, it put the e800’s display in VGA mode (640 x 480, or 480 x 640, depending on how you hold it) all the time, but it also made all legacy programs (programs that aren’t SE-aware) run full-screen by quadrupling pixels—in other words, it made 320 x 240 programs 640...

Re-perfectedIt must sting like a bitch to design an elegant piece of technology, and then see it be intentionally crippled. Such is the Toshiba e800/e805 (same beast, different software packages). A Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC, with 400 MHz X-Scale processor, and a four inch, honest-to-God 640x480 display.  Okay, 480x640 if you hold it right side up. But still… A handheld PDA with a display good enough to view real websites on.  To read an e-book much like (or at least much more like) a paperback.  To actually be able to use Terminal Services on. Like many nifty pieces of hardware before it, the niftiest aspects were corrected in software. First, it was made so that you could only launch...

Free SSH Clients for Pocket PCeBCVG has a write-up on a pair of free SSH clients for Windows Mobile 2003.  One is a “mini” version of PuTTY (PocketPuTTY), while the other (OpenSSH CE)is apparently a port of the BSD SSH client.  The latter is more full-featured, but takes some hacking to install.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like either of them support local tunneling for mail… But hey, you can’t argue with the price! ...
