Now it’s bullet time…

May 27, 2003

A slow week in beer commercials, apparently—pre-summer doldrums?  The most entertaining this week is Heineken’s Matrix Reloaded tie-in, “The Waitress”.

As usual, you can see it, and the rest of the week’s notable commercials at AdAge.

Steamy GoodnessIn my ongoing effort to keep you alerted to the best in tasteless male fantasty beer commercials, I thought I’d point out that AdAge has Miller’s latest steamy effort online for your viewing pleasure. Of course, if you haven’t seen it yet, the full two minute Honda “Cog” commercial (on the same page) still steals the show; sorry ladies… -----...

Real TroubleMichael Sippey points to this AdAge article covering a study from RoperASW and the Washington Post. According to the article, the people who wander around on the Internet (even to sites like this one) are the new “Influentials”—the 10% of the population “whose robust engagement with society influences the attitudes and behavior of the other 90%”. Boy is the rest of this country in Real Trouble.... Wait a minute… Does this mean We’re Responsible for the attitudes of the rest?  Or worse, that we’re Irresponsible for them? That does it.  I may just give up on this Internet thing....  Let ‘em be Miserable Assholes(tm) without my help… ...

I woudn’t take her to a catfightAs part of my ongoing effort to keep covering the best in exploitative beer commercials, I’m sad to report that Miller Brewing will be “retiring”:http://www.adage.com/news.cms?newsId=37961 their controversial “boobfest” campaign after the new Pamela Anderson “Pillowfight” episode which airs next week late nights and on ESPN, after being yanked by CBS during the NCAA finals. If you haven’t seen the Pamela Anderson “Pillowfight” spot, here it is in Windows Media format.  The original “Catfight” spot that caught so much attention (and so many complaints) is here, complete with the “let’s make out” ending that was pulled on many TV airings. Enjoy them while you can. -----...

I Brake for Beer CommercialsAdAge reports that a P&G study finds Tivo Less of a Threat? - apparently people who fast forward through ads with PVRs “still recall those ads at roughly the same rates as people who see them at normal speed in real time.” I’m not sure if this is more a commentary about the remote control trigger-fingers of those surveyed, or the inattention of those who watch “unaided” TV. I was an early Tivo adopter, and for the past two and a half years, I’ve considered it one of the slickest pieces of personal technology to hit the shelf—suddenly I watch the TV I want to watch, when I want to watch it. I don’t watch much more or less than...

XP Service Pack 2 - Biting the BulletWhen Microsoft released Service Pack 2 for Windows XP last month, I was characteristically cautious.  I’ve been bitten before by toxic Service Packs (granted, mostly on Win2K and NT before it), and I’ve found that it often pays to wait a little while for issues to get ironed out, and to let application, driver and firmware providers have a chance to make any necessary adjustments. Unfortunately, time and viruses wait for no man. New exploits are arriving or here that make it mandatory to have SP2 and post-SP2 updates in place in order to be safe.  Before you do so, however, there are a few things you should take care of. I installed SP2 on my machines last week, with...
