Pew Survey on Blog Penetration

January 13, 2005

Just in case there was any remaining doubt on the importance of blogs, the Pew Internet & American Life Project has released the results of a survey they conducted last November.

Pew Internet & American Life Project: Blogosphere

“Two surveys by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in November established new contours for the blogosphere: 8 million American adults say they have created blogs; blog readership jumped 58% in 2004 and now stands at 27% of internet users;”

83% of Musicians Offer DownloadsThe latest survey from the Pew Internet & American Life Project indicates that 83% of artists have provided free samples of their work online, and many say that free downloading has helped them sell CDs and increased the crowds at their concerts (where the artists actually make a buck or two). Only 5% say that it's hurt them. As for their own careers, more of these artists say free music downloading online has helped them than hurt them. Fully 83% of those in the survey say they provide free samples or previews of their music online. And strong pluralities say free downloading has a payoff for them. For instance, 35% of them say free downloading has helped their careers and...

When is a blog a blog? One of the frequently heard objections to adding a weblog to a small business website is that they don't want their site to look like a blog.  Of course, my standard reply is that it doesn't need to in order to have all of the same functionality.  This can work too well, however. Last night I ran into a directory of business related weblogs, and went along happily submitting this site.  Today I got a rejection, along with a note from the directory owner that I had a nice looking site, but they only link blogs... After chuckling a bit, I wrote him a reply thanking him for his consideration and, pointing out for whatever it's worth, that this site...

One way to start a blogDebbie Weil at BlogWrite for CEOs points readers to a series by Joe Carter on How To Start A Blog. While it's not necessarily the approach that I'd recommend, it's still a very interesting read. Joe's focus is more on "how to get attention from the blogging community as a standalone blog" than it is on how to start a business blog. If you're going to use a blog as part of your business web site promotional efforts, then it probably pays to devote a bit more attention to how the pages and archives are structured, paying attention to blending it smoothly into the rest of your site, how it is designed to bring in search engine traffic for your...
