Possessing Wheels

October 12, 2003

As you may have guessed from the crappy cameraphone pics, I am now back among the wheeled…

Woohoo!

As you may also have surmised from the quantity of cameraphone pics, I’m fairly pleased with my new transportation.

I’m at a loss to decide what color to call this—even absent the strange things my phonecam does to colors, it’s rather difficult to pin down.  Gold with a hint of green, perhaps…

It took two bloody weeks to get the thing the 1,000 miles here… Continental drift might have been a faster transport method… lol… But it’s here, it’s mine, and I’ve now got a better way of getting around then trying to schedule time borrowing my oldest’s ride…

A distinct improvement.

Store-bought scripts and square wheelsI’m reasonably competent with a number of different web development technologies, but I try not to spend a lot of time re-inventing the wheel.  Sometimes there will be a widget that I’ll need to add to a site that would cost more in terms of development time than it would to go buy a widget script off the shelf and use it.  Other times, crisis or hard deadlines will make it worth spending a few bucks to have something now rather than delay things while I puzzle it out. In either case, the driving function is the time it takes to get it right… In the past three weeks, I’ve “gone to the well” four times, with varying results.  The...

Free OperaThe Opera web browser has been set free -- no more banners, and no charge. I've been playing with the Mac version (they are offering both Windows and Mac versions for free) a little, and I'll have to say this for it, it's bloody fast -- far faster than Firefox, and it feels quite a bit faster than Safari as well. No actual measurements, just subjective impressions... The downside is I'm not sure I can live without some of the plugins that make Firefox such a joy / necessity to use. On the other hand, if I got rid of about 90% of my plugins, Firefox might be quite a bit faster also......

The Overland RouteFrom the “things that make you shake your head” department… Online shipping logic is getting fairly good, at least among the big e-commerce sites, but sometimes it could use a firm injection of common sense. I ordered an item Tuesday from a “large online retailer that made its reputation selling books”.  It’s a small item, less than a pound, and I selected normal ground freight. Late yesterday I received an “it’s shipped” e-mail, so I went out today to look at the tracking info. To my surprise, this item shipped from a location local to me—about a ten minute drive west of here, in fact.  Unfortunately, it went on ground freight from “a company that made it’s reputation for on-time...

MacBook Pro WishlistI've had my Core Duo MacBook Pro for about a year now, and while it's still got enough flavor left in it to keep chewing for awhile (hey, I hung on with a G4 PowerBook for a long time, and this is miles better), particularly as more and more apps are out as Universal Binaries, there are certainly some features I'd like to see in the not-too-distant future that would make me upgrade in a hot minute. In no particular order... Flash Disk - We're starting to see flash disks in the 64GB - 128GB range be announced, at not terribly unreasonable prices. These are only going to get bigger and cheaper from here out. I'd be thrilled to have...
