Re-Engineering Tivo

May 14, 2005

Engadget asks the musical question “How would you change TiVo?

Some interesting responses, along with some totally predictable ones.

For me (as an exiting Tivo owner), my list would have to be something like this:

  1. A DirecTivo that actually supports all of the nifty things that have been added to the standalone Tivo over the past 2-3 years.
  2. Mac support for Tivo Desktop.
  3. Faster. I’ve “Please Wait”ed way too many hours over the years
  4. An HD option that doesn’t cost a fortune
  5. Less capitulation to content owners

Tivo Desktop 2.1 First LookThe 2.1 version of the Tivo Desktop is now out, and Engadget has a First Look posted. There's a bit of good news for Windows media types... TiVo is actually selling themselves short by emphasizing its support for Microsoft’s Portable Media Center. The integration with Windows Media Player 10 provides for the conversion of TiVo files to WMV, which means you can play the file on ANY portable device running Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, including Pocket PCs and Smartphones. Plus a bit of bad news for everyone else -- a lot of other popular transcoders no longer can open Tivo Desktop files, although this appears to be easy to defeat. Of course, it'll be a long time before there...

Tivo Dashboard WidgetIt may be a bit of narrowcasting, but if you're one of the vanishingly small group of people with a Tivo Desktop enabled Tivo, a Mac, a copy of the new Tiger OS, and a network between them, you can use this Dashboard widget to see what's on your "Now Playing" list. Or you could just get up and go look -- its not like you'll be able to watch it on your Mac anyway, since Tivo Desktop itself doesn't run there. (via PVRBlog)...

Tivo Mobile - Tivo-To-Go on Portable Media PlayersReuters is reporting that TivoToGo is now available on Microsoft portable devices. TiVo said TiVoToGo is now available on Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Windows Mobile-based Portable Media Centers -- paperback-sized devices that can play digital music and videos -- as well as certain Windows Mobile-based Smartphones and PocketPCs handheld Doubtless "Certain Windows Mobile-based Smartphones and PocketPCs" means those running the very newest version of Windows Mobile. Which unfortunately leaves my beloved Toshbia e-800 (with it's large screen and VGA resolution) out of the picture, due to the lack of an updated Windows Media Player and its attendant DRM. If the media industry is going to shove DRM down our throats (and there is now sign of that abating),...

Tivo Download PicsEngadget has up "exclusive pics of TiVo Download ". Apparently they're doing a trial of 60 minutes of previews of IFC's new fall lineup. The bad news -- IFC previews is a long ways from downloading new releases from Netflix. The good news -- Hey! Greg the Bunny is back on IFC this fall! ...

Google Maps on your TivoIf you have a Tivo with the Home Media Option, ArtFahrt (I'm not making that up) has a TiVo interface to GoogleMaps using for you. Use the arrow keys to move around, channel up/down to zoom, number keys to enter a zip code, and select to switch between map and satellite mode. I'm not sure how incredibly useful this is, but it is rather cool....
