Simple ‘Nuff (RSS Full Posts)

June 3, 2003

For those who, like myself, prefer reading in an aggregator, rather than enjoying my oh-so-decorative html, there are now full post versions of my “RSS 1.0”:http://www.nonliteral.com/indexfull.rdf and “RSS 2.0”:http://www.nonliteral.com/indexfull.xml feeds available.

Links to them will go up on the page momentarily.

A shout out to Unix Gal who did all of the work, I just grabbed the templates from her site.

Simple Rsync for Windows (How To)Rsync is one of those magic tools.  What it does is to keep two directories (typically on two different machines) the same. Let's say you want to back up your "my documents folder" every night to a server across a network.  Rsync will take any new documents you've added, and put them in your folder on the server.  It'll also delete any documents you've deleted (if you tell it to.) That's pretty simple, and there are many ways of doing that.  Where Rsync shines is that it will do it with parts of files -- let's say you have a 3 gigabyte file that gets a little update each day.  Instead of deleting the backed up copy and sending a...

Yahoo RSS, not quite there yet.Via Ben Hammersley, The RSS Validator folks have added a page to figure out the RSS feed for a Yahoo Group—enter in the group name, and it generates an URL to the RSS feed.  This would be VERY handy, as I’ve got 40-some Yahoo Groups I track; many of which I use in a manner that would be much faster if I could use them in my aggregator-of-the-moment.  Unfortunately, each and every one of them are groups that you must be a member of to view messages, and if that’s the case, then no RSS for you… There needs to be some way that one could authenticate to Yahoo Groups so that it could cough up the RSS feeds for...

Simple Recipe for Automating TV Torrent DownloadsIn a rational world, this would probably be embraced by the content publishers—Engadget’s How-To: Broadcatching using RSS.  In the present day US, it’s more likely to get you a lawsuit from the MPAA. It would make entirely too much sense to tell people that they could do this all they want if they left the commercials in—let the networks monitor the trackers, (for that matter, let them host them—and even produce the video file), add them to their ratings numbers, and sell advertising based on it.  It’s the gift that keeps on giving; ads keep producing, shows are distributed using bandwidth other people pay for, there’s even room to keep niche genre shows and repurpose old content. (I’d love to...

Google Reader Wish ListSpeaking of Google Reader, 901 AM (or I guess that's 90.1 AM) has a nice list of Needed Features and Fixes for Google Reader. Most of these are pretty good (although I wonder how small your list of feeds is if you really need a "new story available" pop-up), but the one that really intrigued me was: Solve Overflow Memory Leak Problems: The ability to auto-refresh or just manually refresh your RSS feeds in Google Reader is a great feature, but the downside is you will find all those feeds build up in your session, and if your running Firefox, this can cause some serious memory leaks, if you use it frequently. If I could find a place to turn...

anti-mega: RSS. Sucks.anti-mega: RSS. Sucks. Chris Heathcote brings up some valid points about the current state of the art of RSS aggregators, something that I heartily agree with. I’ve had reasonbly good luck recently with Syndirella on the PC.  The thing I like most? It’s a “3 pane” aggregator that opens a browser window within the third pane, rather than launching an external browser (you can easily do the latter, of course, with “open in new window” or by double-clicking the entry title in the second pane. This is also the feature that’s missing from NewsGator that’s keeping it from being my tool of choice. The downside of Syndirella is that at the moment, it has no way of organizing the feeds;...
