T-Mobile Treo 650 on the way?

April 12, 2005

It sounds like a T-Mobile Treo 650 might be coming a lot sooner than most of us expected… Gizmodo is reporting a sighting by a corporate customer.

“Hey joel, not sure if this is news, but t-mobile sent my company 3 treo 650s as a thank-you for renewing a bunch of cell phone accounts. i hadn’t heard anything official about t-mobile supporting treo 650, but this is clear evidence.”

This is only to be expected, after I finally broke down and got a Sprint version of course…

On the other hand, T-Mobile has still to roll out their EDGE service, and I don’t suspect that many of the things I like about the Treo would be nearly as much fun on GPRS…

Sprint Treo 650It’s time to break out the insulated underwear; hell has frozen over and I’m once again a Sprint customer… Whodathunkit? I’ve been jonesing for the Treo 650 for awhile now; pretty much ever since it became clear that it would eventually get wi-fi capability—with or without PalmOne’s help. My attraction to the device is pretty simple—if I can get one single device to carry around in my pocket that is a decent phone, plus has a screen big enough to read e-books, plus has decent e-mail options, then I’m miles ahead. The Treo 650 looks like just the ticket. Why the Treo 650 I still love my Toshiba e-800 for e-books, but e-mail still absolutely sucks on Windows Mobile compared...

Windows Mobile 6 Beta for T-Mobile DashFor those brave, foolhardy folks who just can't wait, apparently there is a beta of the Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for the T-Mobile Dash floating around. According to the folks at the XDA-Developers Excalibur Forum (the Dash is an HTC Excalibur), there is a lot to like: It's noticably faster It adds the ability to edit Word and Excel files HTML Mail Windows Live integration Lots of eye candy There are also the usual Beta compliment of problems -- in some applications the number keys don't automatically change to Text, it apparently broke Blackberry Connect, as well as a few other applications. You can find more details, as well as a raft of workarounds for the various problems on XDA-Developers....

Treo 700w (aka Treo 670) PicturesEngadget has gotten their geeky little hands on a Treo 700w (the smartphone formerly known as a Treo 670), and have up an exclusive first look with lots of pics. A few confirmed specs: Windows Mobile 5.0, one megapixel camera, EV-DO, Bluetooth, 64MB of memory, still trying to conclusively determine the resolution of the display, but it looks to our eyes like it’s 240 x 240 pixels, not 320 x 320. But we’re not 100% on that, ok? They also claim it ran an SD Wi-Fi card just fine out of the box, so that's EVDO, WiFi and Bluetooth -- almost the Treo of my dreams. If ony it wasn't running Windows Mobile. Forget the incongruity of Palm building a...

Treo 650 - Forget the Wi-FiI’ve complained previously about the lack of a decent phone with the features I wanted plus wi-fi, bluetooth, and a decent speed data plan from the carrier.  Much of this was specifically aimed at the Treo 650 when it launched; I felt that leaving wi-fi out was completely brain-dead. Now, after just shy of a week with the Treo 650, I’ve come to a surprising conclusion—I don’t care. Or not much anyway. What I’ve found is that if the carrier’s data plan is fast enough (and unmetered), it doesn’t matter to me.  It’s not like I’m going to be downloading music or movies on the thing, or even going out to some overly-graphic’d web site (on a 320x320 display.) The...

Treo 650 Dial-Up Networking (Sprint)Now that we’ve got the tasty goodness of the 1.12 firmware update for the Sprint Treo 650 out, and Dial-Up Networking is actually enabled in the phone without hacking anything, Make Magazine has a great little write-up on how to use it to hook up your bluetooth-enabled notebook (or desktop even) to the ‘net via your Treo 650. There was much debate as to why DUN was left out of the initial Treo 650 launch. Many believe it was to keep users from connecting PC’s to the Sprint CDMA 1xRTT (1 channel Radio Transmission Technology) data network so that their add-on services like picture mail and “expiring ring tone” downloads would be speedy. There is still much debate about regular...
