The State of Phone Cams

July 21, 2003

It’s official—camera phones need to get better cameras.

After lugging my half-way decent (if not state-of-the-art) digital camera out of town with me, I realize that I didn’t shoot a single damn picture with it.

I did, however, take a large handful of pics with my Nokia 3650.  I need to go dig my Bluetooth adapter out of my notebook bag so that I can offload them and see how bad they are.

The reason I took photos with the semi-crappy phone cam instead of the decent one is simple—I always had it with me.  The other one doesn’t fit well into my pocket to carry all the time, so it requires advance planning.

The simple solution for this is to get decent cameras into phones…

I’ve been kind of wistfully lusting after the teeny new Minolta DiMage X20, since it *is* small enough to keep in my pocket, but with that, my phone and my iPaq, I’d clank when I walked (and not in a stainless steel Duke Nukem sense, either).

Not to mention the risk of me being ear-tagged and dropped into a bell jar in some geek odditorium somewhere….
