Treo 650 Battery Drain Issue

June 25, 2005

I’m glad I’m not the only person having problems with massive battery drains on my Treo 650 after updating to the 1.12 firmware (Sprint version) — misery loves company.

The symptoms appear to be rapid battery drain, serious heat (in fact, when I first noticed the problem I’d just yanked the phone (in my Vaja case) out of my pocket because I literally thought it was burning my leg), and the green “network activity” arrows on full time.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any sort of consensus as to why some people have the problem, or more importantly, how to fix it.

Various suggestions have included re-updating the firmware (making sure that the battery is at 100% charge beforehand), cycling the battery between full discharge and 12 hours on the charger, updating or removing various applications (Chatter E-Mail being most frequently named, probably because it’s so widely used), various combinations of soft and hard resets.

I’ll keep watching the forums for a definitive solution, and (absent that) try a few of these suggestions just as soon as I get a little time to fool with the thing…

In the meantime, that 2200 MAh battery and a couple of the new Seidio “sync/charge with case on” cradles are looking very tempting… That would let me keep it on charge at my desk and overnight both, and hopefully eek out a litle more time per charge.

I have not had the problems you are describing with 1.12 but do not have much more than bcee and tcpmp installed

I don’t have a lot either — in fact, I think at the moment the only three things I have installed are Chatter, Mobipocket, and Voice Dialer. But I sure seem to have the problem…

Or had, anyway — it seems better today, but I’ve not had it off the charger for any lengthy periods of time…

I did end up letting it drained way down last night and have kept it mostly on the charger since — may be that’s done some good.

I have recently had some bad luck with my battery draining as well after updating the firmware and have only installed voice dial.

After my phone showed a green light on the LED i unpluged it and let it sit over night with the phone off and the next day the batter would nearly be dead.

Treo 650 Battery Drain Follow-UpThere still appears to be no fix in site for the massive battery drain problem on Treo 650 with 1.12 firmware that a lot of people (including me) have been experiencing. In the meantime, though, here's something that has kinda-sorta helped for me... The problem appears to be once a network connection is being made, under some circumstances some 1.12 Treos never seem to disconnect on their own. In my case, once I fired up Chatter, you could almost watch the battery drain before your eyes. As a result, I'm now only running Chatter "on-demand". I've got it bound to a hardware button, and when I press the button it launches, connects, and grabs mail. When I'm done checking mail,...

Seidio INNODock Treo 650 Cradle ReviewSince I have yet to get my Treo 650 battery drain issues resolved, I decided this was a good reason (and time) to order a couple of Seidio INNODock cradles for the Treo 650. This way I can easily leave the Treo on the charger both overnight and at my desk, which should insure I have enough charge to get by. Features (from SedioOnline): Uniquely designed (patent pending) cradle to fit Treo 650 with most skin cases, hard cases, and form-fit leather cases. (Screen is still required to face out and the connector needs to be directly accessible.) 3.5 mm stereo Audio out Port makes this cradle able to connect to headphones, speakers, computers, or home sound systems so you...

Chatter Email for Treo 650 Review I’ve long felt that the available e-mail options on the Palm OS devices was far and away better than what was available for Pocket PC, although I’ve never really figured out why.  This still seems to be the case on the Treo. For me, E-mail is one of the real killer connected PDA applications, and one of the main reasons I want to have PDA functionality in an internet-capable phone. I’ve been playing with Chatter Email on the Treo 650 for about a month, and I absolutely love it.  In fact, it’s a substantial part of what I love ABOUT the Treo 650. “Push” E-mail (don’t call the server, the server will call you) is one of the killer...

Treo 700w (aka Treo 670) PicturesEngadget has gotten their geeky little hands on a Treo 700w (the smartphone formerly known as a Treo 670), and have up an exclusive first look with lots of pics. A few confirmed specs: Windows Mobile 5.0, one megapixel camera, EV-DO, Bluetooth, 64MB of memory, still trying to conclusively determine the resolution of the display, but it looks to our eyes like it’s 240 x 240 pixels, not 320 x 320. But we’re not 100% on that, ok? They also claim it ran an SD Wi-Fi card just fine out of the box, so that's EVDO, WiFi and Bluetooth -- almost the Treo of my dreams. If ony it wasn't running Windows Mobile. Forget the incongruity of Palm building a...

Treo 650 Dial-Up Networking (Sprint)Now that we’ve got the tasty goodness of the 1.12 firmware update for the Sprint Treo 650 out, and Dial-Up Networking is actually enabled in the phone without hacking anything, Make Magazine has a great little write-up on how to use it to hook up your bluetooth-enabled notebook (or desktop even) to the ‘net via your Treo 650. There was much debate as to why DUN was left out of the initial Treo 650 launch. Many believe it was to keep users from connecting PC’s to the Sprint CDMA 1xRTT (1 channel Radio Transmission Technology) data network so that their add-on services like picture mail and “expiring ring tone” downloads would be speedy. There is still much debate about regular...
