Treo 700w (aka Treo 670) Pictures
September 22, 2005
Engadget has gotten their geeky little hands on a Treo 700w (the smartphone formerly known as a Treo 670), and have up an exclusive first look with lots of pics.
A few confirmed specs: Windows Mobile 5.0, one megapixel camera, EV-DO, Bluetooth, 64MB of memory, still trying to conclusively determine the resolution of the display, but it looks to our eyes like it’s 240 x 240 pixels, not 320 x 320. But we’re not 100% on that, ok?
They also claim it ran an SD Wi-Fi card just fine out of the box, so that’s EVDO, WiFi and Bluetooth — almost the Treo of my dreams.
If ony it wasn’t running Windows Mobile.
Forget the incongruity of Palm building a Windows Mobile device; that’s got to be a little admission to the inevitable that Palm OS is long in the tooth, and it’s going to be awhile before a replacement is ready. Add to that Palms apparent inability to get driver support squared away for data comm devices (where’s the long-promised SDIO Wi-Fi drivers for the 650? or the 600, for that matter?), and I don’t blame ’em for making it someone else’s problem.
My only real objection to Windows Mobile (and I’ve spent as much time with it over the years as I have with Palm) is that historically the available e-mail programs all suck compared to Palm offerings.
Maybe the “end of Palm OS as we know it for smartphones” will get some of the Palm software companies doing Windows Mobile versions. If this thing were to get a port of Chatter, I’d be willing to trade up in a heartbeat, though.
Well, okay — a 240 x 240 screen isn’t going to cut it either. This thing is going to need to be at least 320 x 320. C’mon, it’s 2005 already.
