Worthy Import
May 27, 2003

Even though it’s been out for six months, the latest A3 (Alabama3 outside the US) album hasn’t made it’s way to US distribution yet.
Nevermind, it’s worth paying for the import…
Like La Peste before it, it took a little while for Power in the Blood to grow on me, but at this point, I think it’s a more worthy succesor to Exile on Coldharbour Lane than La Peste was.
Whiskey-soaked blues vocals, gospel and country roots, all pulled together with a well-informed techno sensibility place this firmly in the mainstream of A3’s work, if you can actually use “mainstream” and “A3” in the same breath.
If you were a fan of Exile on Coldharbour Lane, then run don’t walk to get a copy of this.
If you’re not familiar with A3, then start with Exile on Coldharbour Lane first, and if it’s to your taste, give Power in the Blood a listen.
There are really very few in-betweens with Alabama3—people either tend to love them, or hate them.
If you’ve got a broad taste in music, and appreciate a well-turned lyric and a sense of humor so dry it will drain your drink for you, then A3 might be just up your alley.
On the other hand, if you live and die for the Top 40, you’ll probably do better to give them a pass.
_update_: If you’d like a little taste (the first hit is always free, no?) here are a couple of remix MP3s of cuts off the new album, direct from the Alabama 3 Website
