Yahoo Music Hack

May 30, 2005

No details yet, but Om Malik is reporting that Yahoo’s new Music Store has been hacked, and it’s apparently possible to download unlimited free music without any DRM.

Doubtless this hole will get plugged very soon.

Yahoo Music service can be hacked by anyone to download all the music they want. Robert Chapin figured out how to do it. In a public press release he says, the flaw was discovered by his company, Chapin Information Services.

Treo 650 Windows Media with DRM - Yahoo Music on your TreoNow you can get one of those "all-you-can-eat" music download plans from Yahoo, Napster or Rhapsody, and listen to your tunes on your Treo 650 (or other Palm device). Normsoft is now out with PocketTunes 3.1 Deluxe, which supports Windows Media 10's "Janus" DRM format, letting you listen to as much DRM'd music as you care to give up storage space for. For Treo 650 users, PocketTunes was already popular as a way to get codecs on the device to allow you to use MP3s and other compressed audio files as ringtones. No word yet as to whether you'll be able to set a DRM'd download as a ringtone, but it's probably worth a try. (via AllAboutPalm)...

Yahoo RSS, not quite there yet.Via Ben Hammersley, The RSS Validator folks have added a page to figure out the RSS feed for a Yahoo Group—enter in the group name, and it generates an URL to the RSS feed.  This would be VERY handy, as I’ve got 40-some Yahoo Groups I track; many of which I use in a manner that would be much faster if I could use them in my aggregator-of-the-moment.  Unfortunately, each and every one of them are groups that you must be a member of to view messages, and if that’s the case, then no RSS for you… There needs to be some way that one could authenticate to Yahoo Groups so that it could cough up the RSS feeds for...

Free Music Works for WilcoXeni Jardin writes in Wired about Wilco's "suprising" success. It's becoming a fairly common story -- artist gets shat upon by label, artist says "screw it" and puts out a solid representative sample of their music online, artist finds later commercial releases gobbled up by fans. In this case, they even raised $15K for charity from people who still wanted to pay for the material they released for free. What a concept -- let people hear some of the band's good stuff (not just some not-ready-for-album samples) for free, and they're more willing to buy stuff. Nothing new here, mind you -- it just used to be called "radio play". Except of course that several whole species of moneygrubbers evolved...
