Dishplayer 942 issues

October 25, 2005

Speaking of stabilizing, I may finally have a handle on why my Dishplayer 942 has been missing recordings.

In short, this looks like the front end of a problem that has been causing the Dishplayer to crash repeatedly any time it’s getting an intense workout. This has been getting progressively worse, and it now looks like it might be a hard drive failure issue.

Dishplayer 942 Missing Recordings

October 6, 2005

Grrrr… The one inexcusable thing for a PVR is to miss recordings.

Unfortunately, the Dishplayer 942 (which I’ve been quite happy with until now) has started doing it in spades this week — it missed Nip/Tuck on FX on Tuesday, Lost & Invasion on local HD Wednesday, and now Alias on local HD tonight…

I thought for a minute that it was something I was doing or I had it set wrong, but catching it in the act, it shows the show as recording (in the guide) and recorded (in the schedule), but the red recording light isn’t on, and the recording is nowhere to be seen on the recording list.

Tonight I rebooted it when I caught it doing this, and it came back on and started immediately recording. Unfortunately, it’d already missed 20 minutes.

It looks like I’m not alone — there are a lot of complaints on the DBSTalk Forum.

It looks like this problem coincided with a recent firmware upgrade — I hope they get it fixed quickly.

Dish 942 HDTV PVR – First Look

May 18, 2005

After last week’s comedy of errors, DishNetwork came out today and hooked up (among other less interesting receivers) my Dishplayer 942.

I’ve had an HDTV for about 2 1/2 years now, but have never bothered to get an HD tuner (if I couldn’t have a PVR, I wasn’t interested), so this was also my first look at real genuine HD in my living room.

Okay, first up, a warning — stay away from HD.

For the first ten minutes, it looks stunningly gorgeous. Then it looks normal. After that, all of the non-HD content you watch like looks like crap.

All kidding aside, it took about 10 minutes for me to get on the “everything needs to be in HD yesterday” bandwagon, and instantly memorize where all of my HD channels were.

‘Cause the 942 is all about the HD.
